An icon of the Canadian Rockies, Spirit Island sits amidst a backdrop of picturesque peaks in Maligne Lake of Jasper National Park. According to First Nation legend, the island was once a meeting place for two young lovers of feuding tribes. When the young woman eventually confessed the affair to her father, he forbid her from visiting the island again. Her lover continued to go back, year after year, hoping to one day see his love return. She never would, and he eventually died on the island.
It is said his spirit waits still today.
While I usually offer this print in color, I had this black and white version made for entry in the Iowa State Fair. It ended up being awarded third place in the black and white landscape competition. Photo © copyright by Josh Meier.
