Though national parks are often preserved and known for their grandeur and scenic wonder, other units of the national park system such as monuments and historic sites are designated based on attributes such as cultural, ecological or scientific merit. However these often lesser known and less visited sites are every bit as important and often just as spectacular in their own right, and provide incredible opportunity for education and recreation.
